Backpack Buddies

1 Chronicles 4:10 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me!   And God granted him that which he requested.

What we do

Campbell Chapel Free Will Baptist Church began a Backpack Buddies program in 2012.  The program provides food for children with limited access to food on the weekend throughout the school term.

Currently, we are providing food for 309 children in the following school districts:

  • Rock Hill Elementary
  • Rock Hill Middle
  • rock hill high school
  • Dawson Bryant/Coal Grove Elementary
  • Dawson Bryant/Coal Grove Middle
  • Ironton Middle
  • Open Door School
  • Lawrence County Cooperative Class
  • Ironton High School
  • Lawrence County Early Headstart of South Point

Food is placed in the child's backpack on Friday to take home for the weekend.  The foods provided are ready to eat or are easily prepared. Listed below are some examples we are currently sending home.  When donating please make sure all items are individually wrapped.

  • Individual Boxes of Cereal
  • Individual Packages of Oatmeal
  • Fruit Cups, Applesauce
  • Crackers Packaged of Any Variety
  • Ramen Noodles
  • Granola Bars
  • Fruit Snacks
  • Pudding Cups
  • Macaroni and Cheese
  • Easy Open Soup/Pastas
  • Juice Boxes

Some may wonder about the costs involved for this program.  It costs an average of $2.50 per child each week. As one might expect, this does add up quickly, with 309 children, to an average of $772.50 each week.  This does not include children added into the Backpack Buddy Program throughout the school year.
